Kathmandu – The 11-megawatt Upper Tadi Khola Hydropower Project, developed by Suryakunda Hydroelectric Limited in Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality of Nuwakot district, has officially commenced commercial electricity generation.
The project was completed on 18 Ashad 2082 (July 2, 2025), and following a successful 15-day trial operation, it began feeding electricity into the national transmission grid from 12 Shrawan 2082 (July 27, 2025).
The project is expected to generate approximately 61.319 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually:
50.893 GWh during the monsoon (wet) season
10.425 GWh during the dry season
Power from the project is transmitted to the national grid via a 6-kilometer-long 33 kV transmission line, connecting it to the Nepal Electricity Authority’s distribution network.
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with NEA: 3 Chaitra 2068 B.S.
Environmental approval from the Ministry of Energy: 8 Asoj 2081 B.S.
Generation license from the Department of Electricity Development: 22 Asoj 2072 B.S.
The successful completion of these regulatory processes paved the way for timely execution and commissioning of the project.
Installed Capacity: 11 MW
Turbine Type: 2 × Pelton turbines (5.5 MW each)
Intake Elevation: ~1500 meters
Powerhouse Elevation: 1282 meters
The project design utilizes a high-head, run-of-the-river configuration to harness the flow of the Tadi Khola, ensuring efficient generation throughout the year, particularly during the monsoon season.
The successful commissioning of the Upper Tadi Khola project marks a significant contribution to Nepal’s renewable energy capacity and supports the national goal of energy self-sufficiency.
