Kathmandu - NMB Bank has significantly increased its involvement in Nepal’s energy and hydropower sector, with investments now spread across more than 50 renewable energy projects. The bank continues to play a long-term and impactful role in promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Over the past several years, NMB Bank has supported clean energy initiatives through financing in areas such as solar energy, biogas systems, micro-hydropower, improved cooking stoves, and electric vehicles. These investments aim to support the development of a modern and sustainable energy infrastructure in Nepal.
Most recently, the bank has signed on as a lead financier in three new hydropower ventures:
42 MW Lapche Tamakoshi Hydropower Project
24.8 MW Bajra Madi Hydropower Project
2 MW Chepe Khola Hydropower Project (in which NMB is the sole investor)
Govinda Ghimire, CEO of NMB Bank, stated that the bank is adopting a comprehensive approach to investment, including detailed assessment of technical feasibility, environmental impact, and project risks. Based on these evaluations, the bank plans to expand its hydropower investment portfolio in the future.
In a move to accelerate its commitment to green financing, NMB Bank is preparing to issue a green bond worth US$ 60 million (approximately NPR 8.18 billion). The bond will be launched in collaboration with:
International Finance Corporation (IFC)
British International Investment (BII)
Meta Life
The proceeds from the bond will be directed toward renewable energy projects, including:
Solar energy systems
Electric mobility
Green buildings
Biogas technologies
